Junghans Max Bill Automatic Bauhaus - 27/4308.02

Dark, refined and full of character, the Junghans max bill Automatic Bauhaus (ref. 27/4308.02) gives the Bauhaus tribute a striking all-black look. The matt black dial uses luminous dots as hour markers, along with black hands with red inlays and a red-tipped seconds hand, so the signature Bauhaus red stands out vividly against the darkness, with a date display tucked neatly into the layout.

The 38mm stainless steel case is finished in a matt black PVD coating and measures just 10mm in height, with a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal on top. Through the partially transparent Bauhaus motif on the four-screw case back, you can watch the self-winding J800.1 movement at work, with up to 38 hours of power reserve. A black leather strap with a matching matt black PVD buckle and 5 bar water resistance round out a modern automatic watch with deep design roots.

Timepiece History

Junghans was founded on April 14, 1861, in Schramberg in Germany's Black Forest, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law, Jakob Zeller-Tobler, set up a firm making parts for large Black Forest clocks; the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had grown into the largest clock manufacturer in the world, and in 1918 it completed its nine-level terrace building, the Terrassenbau, which today houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans remains based in Schramberg today.

Max Bill, an artist and architect trained at the Bauhaus, began working with Junghans in 1956. Table clocks followed in 1958, and in 1961 he designed Junghans' first line of mechanical wristwatches, a line Junghans still produces in nearly the same form.

The Bauhaus models in the max bill line take their red details from the doors of the Bauhaus building in Dessau, which Junghans says would have caught Bill's attention on his first visit to the town. Junghans' April 2024 press release quotes the book max bill am Bauhaus, which recalls the building seen from the Dessau train station, its student dormitory set with balcony doors like minium-red accents. This version carries that tribute in matt black PVD.
